Flat-pack furniture and the fixing nobody does: anti-tip on the Gold Coast

Most flat-pack assembly stops when the last screw goes in. On tall units with a real tip risk, the wall fixing is the part that matters.

Most flat-pack assembly stops when the last cam lock is tightened. The unit looks finished, the box goes out to the bin, and everyone moves on. On a tall piece of furniture, though, the most important part of the job hasn’t been done yet.

Which furniture needs it

Not everything needs to be fixed to the wall. A low TV unit or a bedside table isn’t a realistic tip risk. The ones that are:

  • Tall bookcases and shelving units
  • Wardrobes and tall storage towers
  • Chests of drawers that are tall relative to their depth
  • Anything in a home, rental or centre where children can climb it

Fitting anti-tip hardware where there’s a genuine risk is the right call. Fitting it to every unit regardless just adds cost and holes in the wall.

Why the kit isn’t enough on its own

Most flat-packs come with a strap or bracket, but the wall fixing is left up to you, because the right fixing depends on the wall. Plasterboard, brick and blockwork each need different hardware, and a fixing into bare plasterboard alone won’t hold a loaded unit that starts to tip.

Doing it properly

  1. Assemble the unit square and level, packing it where the floor isn’t.
  2. Locate a stud or solid fixing point, or use hardware rated for the wall type.
  3. Fix the strap or bracket to the unit’s solid top rail, not a thin back panel.
  4. Check it under load before walking away.

For property managers and centres

If tall furniture is going into a rental or an early learning centre, ask for anti-tip fixing on those units as part of the assembly quote. It’s a small add-on that removes a real risk.
